The USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, mini VGA and Ethernet jack are on the left. The DVD drive opens on the right side and there's a single USB 2.0 port on the right. Most ports are located on the left side so they won't get in the way of you right handed folks who use a USB mouse. Getting at the hard drive, battery and other components requires some geek skills. The only readily accessible component is the RAM slot that lives under a door secured by a small Phillips head screw. 500 cycles for the average laptop battery. They claim the battery will go for 1,500 charges (full charging cycles) without degrading vs. The battery is sealed inside, which isn't uncommon on thin notebooks, and it's an 8 cell battery with Samsung's extended battery life feature. The back lid is sufficiently rigid so that there's no light pooling in the display if you touch the back. Our notebook has good build quality with excellent seam match and no creaking. We like the clean lines and keyboard deck that's designed with typists in mind.

The Samsung Series 7 notebooks, like the Series 9, have a distinct look that's not copying the big fruit. This is a sleek and minimalist laptop with an understated and elegant design. Beware the Best Buy version that downgrades the dedicated graphics, loses the backlit keyboard and adds WiMAX. There are several Samsung Series 7 notebooks, ranging from 14" to 15.6", and we're looking at the upscale Chronos model NP700Z5A-S04US with a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 2675QM 4 core CPU, switchable Intel HD 3000 and AMD Radeon HD6750M graphics with 1 gig VRAM, an internal DVD burner, 6 gigs of RAM and a 7RPM hard drive. This notebook won't burn your lap or make the fellas worry about their fertility. The underside is plastic but we're totally cool with that because plastic is durable and dissipates heat well. While their smartphones lose weight with the help of lots of plastics, the Chronos has an aluminum lid and deck.
